Mattresses and bed bases from TEMPUR

tempur (1)

TEMPUR has become big thanks to mattresses made of memory foam: a special material that provides optimal support and absorbs weight at lightning speed. This so-called NASA memory foam, or TEMPUR foam, is incorporated into all mattresses and pillows, making them feel like you're sleeping virtually floating. The material provides support where the body needs it and molds to the sleeper's physique like a mold. This feels soft, without pinching the blood vessels and nerves, optimally relaxes the muscles and automatically corrects the back and cervical vertebrae to the correct position.

But what you notice most of all is that it makes you fall asleep wonderfully and the body finds the support to continue sleeping peacefully. So you only experience the benefit of TEMPUR when you wake up, rested and without physical complaints. Every morning anew.

TEMPUR is not only the brand name, but also the name they have given to the material. This memory foam was originally developed by the US space agency NASA, to absorb the immense G-forces that astronauts are exposed to during launch. TEMPUR was one of the first brands to recognize that this material could also offer immense benefits for sleep. Since its introduction in 1995, the brand has therefore become an enormous success in a short time. At first, the brand mainly supplied beds to hospitals, so that patients with physical complaints could also sleep well. However, the comfort was so appreciated that consumers for home use also became increasingly interested in beds made of this material.
Ironically, the memory foam ultimately proved less suitable for use in space shuttles. It was therefore never used in space, but since NASA released it in 1980, it has been rapidly embraced and further developed by TEMPUR and other mattress manufacturers. The fact that it now makes us sleep better here on earth just goes to show how innovation can sometimes come from unexpected places.
Our experiences with TEMPUR
We too have embraced TEMPUR and have had excellent experiences with the beds and mattresses for years. Below, we list the most important benefits and features.
The benefits of memory foam mattresses
In the Netherlands and Belgium, TEMPUR, together with Mline, is the most well-known provider of memory foam mattresses. TEMPUR calls this material TEMPUR foam, but in fact it is viscoelastic polyurethane, also called memory foam or NASA foam for convenience. Mline focuses mainly on the Dutch market, while TEMPUR can be seen as a successful international player.
Memory foam a unique material with a number of very special properties that contribute to a relaxing night's sleep:

  • Forms seamlessly to the sleeper's body shapes
  • Ensures unimpeded blood circulation during sleep
  • Memory foam mattresses relieve pressure on nerves and muscles
  • Memory foam reduces the risk of bedsores and helps reduce neck and back pain
  • Less turning and tossing during the night, promoting sleep quality and reducing the likelihood of waking in between
  • Long life and high quality. This eliminates the need to rotate the mattress every season like traditional mattresses (the mattress on its axis and head-foot)

However, there are also disadvantages to memory foam mattresses

  • Turning and flipping can be slightly more difficult on some models precisely because the material "moves" so well. However, this is not the case with the new Tempur Hybrid, and the Tempur Sensation is also equipped with a top layer of Tempur foam that is more responsive.
  • Memory foam has a "reaction time" of a few seconds before it conforms to a new body position. Although this gets used quickly, some people find this unpleasant at first.
  • The high-quality memory foam mattresses have a higher purchase price. That investment is always recouped with longer life and high comfort.
  • You can't use an electric blanket on memory foam because the top layer will become too soft. That may be a drawback for electric blanket enthusiasts, but in this video you can see why these blankets are actually not a good idea.

Memory foam: TEMPUR or MLine?
Anyone who likes to sleep on a memory foam mattress basically has a choice between two good providers. So the big question is: what are the differences between TEMPUR's memory foam mattresses and MLine's?
In price and quality, both brands are comparable. Until recently, the main difference was that MLine also has models where memory foam is supplemented with micro or mini pocket springs, which act as "shock absorbers" for movement. Recently, however, TEMPUR has started offering the same benefit with the TEMPUR Hybrid. In addition, MLine divides the mattress surface lengthwise into multiple zones so that each body part finds the right level of support. As a result, the mattress offers more support at the level of the lower back and lumbar region, for example, while the shoulder zones sink in more and provide less resistance to movement.
Above all, the fact is that MLine is a relative newcomer to the market, while TEMPUR has proven its good reputation worldwide for many years. This is also reflected in the higher warranty terms. TEMPUR offers a 15-year warranty: reimbursing the full purchase price in the first five years and deducting ten percent of the purchase price each year thereafter. MLine also offers a five-year full warranty, but the period in which part of the purchase price is refunded ceases with MLine after only ten years. In this sense, TEMPUR seems the safest choice, since this brand is the world market leader in memory foam products and thus has already proven its high quality.
Another important point is that MLine offers fewer options in the purchase of larger double mattresses. Unlike TEMPUR, MLine does not have mattresses of, say, 180×200 cm. With Mline, a mattress size larger than 160 centimeters always consists of two separate cores tucked into one mattress cover. And no matter how closely these fit together, the seam between the two cores will of course always remain somewhat tangible. The advantage of this, however, is that it is possible to combine two different firmnesses in one mattress, which is handy if you and your partner have different preferences in this.
Another advantage of MLine is that the top layer of the mattress is incised in a very clever way. As a result, you don't actually lie on the entire mattress, but the weight is carried by square "chambers" that move separately from each other. As a result, they respond flexibly in places where the body moves (such as at shoulder height), but are actually firmer in the lumbar and hip zones and offer more support.

Alternatives to TEMPUR Mattresses
While TEMPUR is thus the safest choice, MLine has also gained considerable ground in recent years. This brand too now has a good reputation and is appreciated by more and more customers for its good quality. Especially sleepers who are looking for a bed in which it is easy to turn in a different body position should try out whether the pocket springs in MLine's top range offer a more pleasant sleeping experience.
Sleepers who sleep in less everyday positions might also consider MLine because of its separate support zones. Abdominal sleepers, for example, will find extra support at the level of the abdomen and lumbar region in the Mline Slow Motion VI, which reduces the strain on the lower back.
MLine is also a bit more flexible to combine with different mattress bases. In fact, you can place these mattresses on any base, including a spiral base. With Tempur, on the other hand, it is recommended to lay them on a Tempur saucer base.
Those considering other brands, however, will have to move away from memory foam. This is for the simple reason that there are no brands besides MLine and TEMPUR that produce this material at the same high quality. The best alternative to memory foam then is natural latex, as found in mattresses from Swissflex or Belgian Kreamat. This material offers pressure relief and pressure distribution that is comparable to memory foam.
Three different collections, each with its own feel
Those who choose TEMPUR have (in addition to the brand new Hybrid) three traditional mattress options at their disposal. Of course, each choice comes in different sizes and thicknesses, but TEMPUR's collection presents you with three clear choices. For best comfort, these mattresses are paired with a TEMPUR platter base, but let's take a look at the mattresses first:

  • The TEMPUR ORIGINAL is the classic that made the brand great. This mattress offers all the benefits of the pressure-reducing and supportive TEMPUR material.
  • The TEMPUR SENSATION is the softer version of the Original, which feels softer thanks to an additional top layer of high mobility foam. This also makes it easier to turn or change position. The TEMPUR materials under this top layer ensure that those movements are well absorbed and the parts of the body still receive sufficient support.
  • The TEMPUR CLOUD offers even more softness, by allowing you to sink into the top layer like in a cloud. The bottom layer, however, continues to offer the same support, making sleeping on this CLOUD a bit like the experience of a waterbed.
TEMPUR Zero G

Incidentally, the top layer of the SENSATION and the CLOUD is less temperature-sensitive than traditional TEMPUR foam, so the top layer doesn't have to adjust to your body heat for several seconds in winter.
TEMPUR also has a solution for people who suffer from heat or excessive perspiration: the TEMPUR BREEZE mattresses are aimed at optimizing the temperature experience. The top layer of TEMPUR Climate Material promotes airflow through the mattress and ensures faster moisture removal. In addition, the cover is made of a special 3D material, which transports moisture faster and is easily washable.

The latest innovation: TEMPUR Hybrid
Recently TEMPUR introduced the new TEMPUR Hybrid. It is the answer to Mline's mattresses, as TEMPUR with the Hybrid also has a mattress that combines micro pocket springs with memory foam. Thus TEMPUR offers an alternative to the MLine V and VI.
The Hybrid combines the pressure-reducing effect of the TEMPUR foam with micro pocket springs that absorb every body movement very precisely. Compared to the combination of cold foam with a memory foam top layer in the TEMPUR SENSATION, the composition of the Hybrid offers a whole new level of sleeping comfort.
The Hybrid is available in a Supreme variant and an Elite. The difference is that the Hybrid Supreme has a 3-inch comfort layer and a 5-inch supportive layer underneath, while the Elite offers 1 and 3 inches extra there. So for a slightly higher price, the Elite offers just that little bit of extra support and comfort.
For under the mattress: TEMPUR disc bases or high-quality slatted bases
As mentioned above, TEMPUR mattresses come out best in combination with a TEMPUR disc base. These platter bases are actually the new next step in sleep technology, providing a better alternative to the traditional slatted base.
Instead of vertical slats, the mattress on a platter base is supported by 72 individual saucers. These saucers are shaped like a funnel, allowing them to move very flexibly in all directions from their center. This offers some advantages over traditional slatted bases:

  • The body's weight and movements are absorbed faster and more evenly on a plate base. This is because pressure is absorbed directly by individual saucers, rather than the weight being distributed across the width of the entire slat. Dish bases provide the same counter pressure across the entire width of the bed. With slatted bases, the bed always feels harder at the edges because curved slats provide more back pressure in the middle.
  • The back pressure is much easier to adjust on saucer bases by turning the suspension harder or softer. This can be manually adjusted to your own preference.
  • All disc bases offer more support where the body needs it (lower back and lumbar) and more flexibility for the shoulder zones, for example. You will find these different "comfort zones" in slatted bases only in the more luxurious versions (from Swissflex, for example).

Sleeping on saucer bases: four different options:
As with mattress selection, TEMPUR offers four clear options for saucer bases. For all saucer bases, they can be installed in any existing bed frame. The disc bases are also divided into four zones as standard, with the saucers offering different degrees of firmness for each level. The electrically adjustable models can also be equipped with an additional massage unit, for a modest additional price.

  • The TEMPUR Flex Premium 500 is the standard disc base. It offers all the comfort of the saucer base technology, but unlike the more luxurious models, this "flat" base is not adjustable.
  • The TEMPUR Flex Premium 2000 offers the added luxury of an electrically adjustable headboard and footboard. A wireless remote control operates the two electric motors that move the mattress into a comfortable position for sitting.
  • The TEMPUR Flex 3000 is an extra luxurious adjustable disc base. The difference with the Premium 2000 is that the electrical technology is concealed. The motor is attached at the same height as the side rail of the bed base instead of being underneath it. This means that the Flex 3000 can be installed in any bed frame, including frames with cross slats supporting the base.
  • The TEMPUR Flex 4000 is the most prestigious variant. It offers not two, but four electric motors so that the mattress zones for the neck, foot, hip and back can be adjusted separately.

All-in-one bed systems: optimal comfort in a beautiful design
Anyone looking for an entirely new bed can turn to TEMPUR for three complete bed systems.

  • The Tempur Zero G maximizes the comfort of the electrically adjustable bed base. The stepless adjustability allows you to set the desired position very precisely. You can then adjust the mattress to a flat position with just 1 push of a button.
  • The TEMPUR North is a great choice for lovers of fine design. This bed system is distinguished by its minimalist look, with rounded shapes and a beautiful upholstery of woven fabric. Moreover, because the legs are subtly concealed, the bed appears to float.
  • The TEMPUR Prestige offers high-end design and the most choice in terms of style and design, with a bed frame and headboard covered in beautiful upholstery made of highly durable material. This Prestige is available in different looks, such as anthracite, smoke or leather variants.

Before you buy a mattress: are you a hard or a soft sleeper?
Choosing a good mattress is a very personal choice. After all, everyone has a different body, different sleeping habits and different preferences. The most important one in between is that between a hard and a soft mattress.
It is often thought that depends mainly on body weight, but more important are the physique and especially the sleeping position you adopt. This determines whether the body of the mattress determines the right pressure distribution and reduction in the right places. If this is not the case, blood vessels and nerve tracts are pinched off, which does not improve sleeping comfort.
Therefore, some general tips for choosing between a hard or soft mattress:

  • For the side sleeper, it is important that the hip lies straight and the mattress gives sufficient space to the shoulders. On the one hand, the shoulders must be able to sink into the mattress, but receive sufficient support from the bed base.
  • The back sleeper especially needs good lower back support. A good mattress prevents it from "hollowing out. The test is to see if you can easily put a hand between mattress and lower back. With a good mattress, you will find that this space is not there.
  • The stomach sleeper is especially recommended to change his sleeping position. In the long run, sleeping on the stomach leads to complaints in the neck and lower back. These are difficult to prevent by choosing a mattress (or pillow). However, there are ways to slowly teach you to adopt a different sleeping position. TEMPUR has specially developed the Ombracio pillow for this purpose.

It is also important to realize that the body will always have to get used to a new mattress and a new firmness. Those who have always slept softly will not immediately feel at home on a harder mattress. However, it is quite possible that after a few nights the body will have adjusted and may end up sleeping better than ever. It is therefore best to first get expert advice on the best firmness for your body type and sleeping position.
Natascha, I hear mostly positive stories about TEMPUR, what do you actually sleep on?
Yes, I get this question more often from customers. I myself sleep on a waterbed, but we do have a TEMPUR bed in our guest room. We always get very positive reactions to this. Most guests say they sleep wonderfully on it, also because of the combination with a camel-hair comforter. Some customers even decide to buy their own TEMPUR bed with camel-hair comforter straight away, because they want to be able to sleep like that at home too.

SET AN AGREEMENT
What else should you know about TEMPUR?
Many people wonder whether memory foam feels different in the winter than in the summer. This is a fair question, as the material is known precisely for responding to heat. The concern that ambient temperature affects the sleeping experience is therefore understandable, but nevertheless unnecessary.
With the TEMPUR Sensation, Cloud and Hybrid, no seasonal differences are noticeable anyway. With the TEMPUR Original mattress types, there is indeed a chance that it may feel slightly harder and colder in winter. However, this is only noticeable in the first few seconds. After all, because of that same property of TEMPUR foam, the mattress also reacts immediately to your body heat. In other words, it is indeed true that a TEMPUR mattress feels slightly harder in the winter, but only in the moments when you are not lying on it. As soon as you get into bed, your mattress resumes the same familiar firmness and temperature.
Warranty conditions
TEMPUR provides one of the best warranty conditions of any provider. No other brand manufacturer offers a 15-year warranty period on its mattresses. Of these, five years are full and then ten years pro rata. So anyone who has a problem with the mattress after ten years will still get half of the purchase price back. However, conditions are that the product was purchased from an authorized TEMPUR dealer and that it is registered online after purchase. Whereas MLine offers a 100-day exchange guarantee on all newly purchased mattresses, TEMPUR gives you a 90-day exchange guarantee.
TEMPUR also offers a standard manufacturer's warranty on other products in its range. Full overview:

Hybrid mattress10 years (full)

More than mattresses: pillows and seat cushions also benefit from memory foam
TEMPUR has perfected the properties of memory foam to perfection, so it would actually be a shame if this comfortable material was only used for mattresses. The truth is that TEMPUR was already using memory foam for pillows, long before they managed to perfect the technique for larger surfaces such as mattresses.
The material's application has only broadened over the years. Hence, TEMPUR also has an extensive range of products for during waking life. Among these comfort products you will find, for example, a travel pillow, which supports the neck during a nap in the car or on an airplane. But even chairs at home are a lot more comfortable with TEMPUR comfort pillows. And cycling becomes a lot more comfortable with a bicycle saddle made of TEMPUR foam.

Pillows: ergonomically designed for every sleeping position
In addition to mattresses, TEMPUR pillows are also among the best because they also offer the benefits of memory foam. Moreover, TEMPUR designs ergonomic pillows with a particular sleeping position in mind, so that the pillows provide precise support in the places where your sleeping position requires it.

  • The TEMPUR Original is the classic pillow whose shape shapes the natural curve of your neck. This aligns the neck and back vertebrae. They are available in different heights.
  • The Tempur Millennium has a front that tilts up to accommodate the neck, making this ergonic pillow ideal for those who sleep on their back or side.
  • The TEMPUR Classic is the "all-rounder" that is suitable for any sleeping position, but thanks to its rounded corners, will especially please side sleepers. As the name suggests, the Classic has the shape of a traditional pillow, but with the support of memory foam.
  • Also very cleverly thought out: the Symphony has two different shapes on each side. One side is perfect for the side sleeper, with an extra point of support for the shoulders. Flip the pillow over and you have the perfect shape for sleeping on the back.
  • The TEMPUR Sonata is also designed for the fickle sleeper: its particular shape provides continuous support to the head when you turn from left to right side (and vice versa).
  • The TEMPUR Ombracio is designed to help the stomach sleeper lie in a better position. The pillow lifts the body slightly to provide breathing room for the stomach. The notches on the side allow for easier breathing when sleeping on the stomach.
sleep

In addition to these ergonomic pillows, TEMPUR also has comfort pillows. Here the choice and comfort depends not so much on the sleeping position, but on the desired feeling. The TEMPUR Traditional comfort pillows mold easily to your posture, but retain their own shape and firmness over the years. Other comfort pillows each offer their own advantages: the Easyclean is unique because the entire pillow can be machine-washed. The Breeze is an extra soft pillow that still provides adequate support. The Comfort Cloud is made of extra-soft material, while the Comfort Original and Comfort Sensation offer optimal relaxation and softness thanks to the thousands of TEMPUR micro cushions that distribute the weight.
MAKE AN AGREEMENT
Never make a bad purchase again: good advice beforehand and exchange guarantee afterwards 😉
Even though all TEMPUR cushions are of top quality: we would like to emphasize again that a pillow should always be tested and felt personally before you can be sure it's the right one for you. So always try out a pillow yourself, with a consultant who understands his trade. The pillow should therefore be experienced in combination with the right mattress and slatted base. Issues such as preferred posture, perspiration and mobility also influence the choice.
Those who take good advice in this way have a small chance of making a wrong purchase. After three or four nights of getting used to it, you can usually determine whether you have indeed purchased the right one. TEMPUR also has a standard test pillow program. If your purchase is not the right one, you can exchange it for one that does meet your needs. But if you get good advice, you will not actually need this replacement guarantee.
Physiologicalcomplaints and special requirements
Sometimes physiological complaints or other physical discomforts can make extra demands on a bed. In these cases, TEMPUR is pre-eminently one of the brands that can be considered. After all, let's not forget that the brand became big as a supplier of hospital beds. Its pressure-relieving and supportive properties are therefore ideal for people who are physically extra vulnerable.
For people with a characteristic physique, TEMPUR is also attractive because mattresses can be designed in any size. The price is simply calculated per square meter of desired surface area. This does increase the delivery time slightly, because they have to be made to measure.
TEMPUR certification and awards:
As the technological frontrunner in the bed world, TEMPUR has several awards and prizes to its name. Most notably, TEMPUR is the only brand in the world certified by the U.S. space agency NASA. This is due to the rich history in which the brand has perfected NASA-designed materials. According to NASA, TEMPUR is therefore as innovative and groundbreaking as these space travelers.
Another beautiful piece of technology is the TEMPUR Space Cabin, which you can find at the better dealers. In this cabin you can personally experience what it feels like to sleep weightlessly.
TEMPUR distinguishes between Premium Resellers, Platinum Dealers, Official Pillow Dealers and Gold or Silver Dealers. From these qualifications you can recognize whether a dealer offers the full range, or just a part of the collection.

Safe buying thanks to the 90-day return guarantee:
Another fine service from TEMPUR is the 90-day return guarantee. After all, TEMPUR realizes how personal the choice for the ideal bed is. Should a purchase not provide the sleep you hoped for, you can exchange it for another one up to ninety days after the purchase date.
The exchange guarantee applies to all mattresses, but only in combination with the purchase of a TEMPUR bed base.
