A new application has recently become available on the iPhone: Sleep Cycle. It is an application that monitors your sleep using a motion sensor. Sleep Cycle's app records what sleep phase you are in. The great thing is, this iPhone app, wakes you up (hopefully) rested at the right time. If the Appstore is to be believed, there are many positive user experiences.
Sleep Cycle makes your iPhone work as a kind of motion sensor on your mattress (see image). The application then determines which sleep phase you are in. It is important to place the iPhone next to the pillow and set the iPhone to airplane mode. This way it is possible for the sensor to register your movements on the mattress that you cause during your (light) sleep phases. After a few nights, Sleep Cycle recognizes your sleep pattern and can predict when you wake up most rested. The iPhone app wakes you up within a half-hour window before you need to get up at the latest.
There are already several initiatives like this on the market. The Axbo sleep phase alarm clock is one such example. This alarm clock costs about € 175. Much cheaper is the Sleep Cycle app for € 0.79 to download. Definitely worth it if you travel a lot. Perhaps much more convenient than the wake-up call at the hotel.
