It is a fact that noise and sounds above a certain volume can easily cause sleep disturbances. Once the noise stops, the sleep disturbances usually disappear as well. Gabriele Rossbach writes in her book "Finally Sleeping Well:"
You shouldn' t actually use earplugs permanently when there is persistent disturbing noise.
Their use is justified, if necessary, when substantial noise, for example from planes taking off and landing, squeaking train or streetcar rails or noisy car and truck traffic at gas stations, adversely affects sleep. It is important to note that using earplugs actually makes you more sensitive to sound and sharper of hearing . Because when we sleep, our brains are still active; they monitor the environment to see if there is any "danger" somewhere that might necessitate waking up.
The control mechanism that was once vital for survival is now hampered by earplugs. As a result, the brain must exert more effort and be even more vigilant and therefore more awake. Our sensitivity to sound thus increases. Earplugs are therefore more likely to lead to restless sleep if used permanently.
Earplugs are especially useful on long intercontinental flights. An airplane produces a permanent noise. This noise makes individuals imperceptibly tired. By using earplugs during the flight, you will become less tired and recover faster from your jet leg or trip.
