This is really a very important article. Because if there is 1 sleep comfort article about which there are endless misconceptions, it is a waterbed. Time to get rid of the myths and urban legends and list the sense and nonsense of waterbeds.
THE 3 MAIN REASONS YOU NEED A WATERBED
There are very many reasons why you sleep great on a waterbed and why you should consider buying a waterbed. But for starters, I like to tell you the 3 main reasons to choose a waterbed.
- A waterbed is hygienic. The reason for this is very simple: your mattress is a tightly sealed unit protected by a removable and washable cover. Unlike traditional mattresses, where the perspiration you lose at night can seep in, this is impossible with a waterbed. The vinyl surface of your mattress is impermeable. As a result, salt crystals and skin flakes - which remain after your perspiration evaporates - remain at most in the cover of your waterbed. It is precisely those flakes that dust mites (to which people are allergic) are so fond of. Besides being impermeable, your waterbed's mattress is also very easy to clean. For optimum hygiene, your mattress cover goes in the wash at 60° 3 to 4 times a year. At the same time, clean the cover and vinyl of your mattress with a damp cloth and vinyl cleaner. This way, you not only have a squeaky clean waterbed, but it also immediately extends the life of your mattress because it helps prevent hairline cracks.
- A waterbed is very pressure relieving. Sleeping on a waterbed distributes pressure perfectly across your body. This is the main difference between sleeping on a mattress and in a waterbed. In a waterbed, your spine always maintains its natural shape and your body is perfectly supported, regardless of your sleeping position. You are carried by the water and seem to escape gravity. A wonderfully relaxing feeling that lets your intervertebral discs and spine recover well during the night.
- A waterbed ensures good circulation. This is because you heat a waterbed so it always has the ideal temperature. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Good circulation helps relax the muscles. Because in a heated waterbed you do not use your own body energy to warm up your bed and blankets, your breathing and heart rate will be lower and you will enjoy a healthy and deep sleep.
NONSENSE ABOUT WATERBEDS
I already gave it away in the intro, in this article I want to debunk some cowboy stories about waterbeds. After all, it would be a shame if you decided not to buy a waterbed based on misinformation.
- In a waterbed, you get seasick. Honestly? I find it hallucinatory that such a rumor is still going around even today. Of course you don't get seasick in a waterbed. It is true that in the pioneering days of waterbeds, some models were sold with too little stability. But the current generation of waterbeds is perfectly balanced thanks to fiber layers. By the way, you have the choice whether you like your mattress to move for a moment when you get into bed, or not. As far as I'm concerned, such a slight movement is just part of the charm of a waterbed.
- Men who sleep in a waterbed become infertile. That myth originates from the fact that waterbeds are heated. But the fact is that the temperature of a waterbed never exceeds 30°C. And that is a lot lower than our body temperature. So there is no risk of sperm cells losing their quality from a heated waterbed. In other words, a waterbed is not a good contraceptive 🙂 Which brings us immediately to the next nonsense.
- Making love on a waterbed is hard. No, making love on a waterbed really doesn't feel like a balancing act on a wild sea. A waterbed is stable. You sink a little in it and seem to float, but that is certainly not a disadvantage when making love. There is one advantage: with a waterbed, you don't risk a squeaky or creaky bed.
- In a waterbed, it is difficult to turn or turn. That depends entirely on the stabilization of your waterbed. Only waterbeds with low stabilization can give the impression that turning and turning is somewhat more difficult. Basically, you don't feel any difference from other beds.
- A waterbed requires a lot of maintenance. That's true if you find that your dishwasher is also very high-maintenance 🙂 The only thing you need to do with a waterbed is refill or bleed some water from time to time. In addition, you add some conditioner semi-annually. Not so bad if you contrast that with the many benefits.
- A waterbed costs a fortune in electricity. For electricity consumption, you can expect an annual cost of about 45 € per berth. That means a couple pays 90 € of electricity per year. A fortune doesn't seem to me to be.
- A waterbed creates electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation is indeed very unhealthy. Choose a waterbed with a Carbon Classic Heater and an IQ thermostat. With this, you digitally set when your bed is heated and when it is not.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BE SURE OF BEFORE BUYING A WATERBED?
There are some very important criteria that you should look for when buying a waterbed. These elements determine whether or not you are getting a quality waterbed in your home. What do you recognize a good waterbed by?
- A washable and divisible cover: Choose a 60°C washable cover in two parts. This is much easier and fits in any washing drum.
- High quality vinyl without harmful substances and top finish: Only buy a waterbed where the vinyl does not contain phthalates. There are biodegradable alternatives where, for example, Mesamoll is used as a plasticizer.
- High quality and thermally hardened fiber layers: Fiber layers are a crucial part of the waterbed and provide good stability in the waterbed. Thermally hardened fiber layers are bonded by heat. A more durable process than the glued version that eventually loses its shape because the conditioner you add semi-annually causes the glue to dissolve.
- High quality weld placement and finish: Ideally, the welds of your waterbed are at the bottom and are 3-fold welded. This way there is much less pressure or stress on the welds and pressure and tensile loads from the water are much better absorbed.
Does it sound a little overwhelming? That's because you're not familiar with it. And that brings me to the next tip: buy your waterbed from a sleep specialist with excellent service and in-depth knowledge about waterbeds. They will give you the right advice, even after the sale. Because a liter of water more or less results in a totally different sleeping feeling. Then it helps to deal with someone who knows what it's all about.
IS A WATERBED FOR YOU?
As with all beds and mattresses, that's a personal story. But take it from someone who himself sleeps on a waterbed AND specializes in healthy sleeping: a waterbed is highly recommended. I never want to trade it again. You have a very hygienic and pressure-reducing bed that gives you an excellent sleep because you toss and turn much less, so you wake up perfectly rested. Only to customers who travel a lot I don't recommend a waterbed. Because once you get used to it, it's harder to sleep on another bed and that's annoying if you're constantly on the road.
